Message from Maitreya:
I very recently received a letter from Natalija, one of my graduate students. Here is a portion of her letter:
“I have been exposed to so much poverty in my overseas travels in the last year; South Africa, Egypt, and I recently saw “Slumdog Millionaire” about the poverty and slums of India. Every time I would see how some people live, I would get very emotional. I have taken on the care of a child through a humanitarian organization, but I have a feeling I could do more. I know it is a karma of these people and they have chosen a life like this. But it still makes me feel as if I want to do something, at least send healing to these countries .Can you please address this subject and tell me what we can do and how to deal with this increased poverty in the world from your standpoint.”
Here is my reply to Natalija:
Yes, there is poverty in the world, much of it – too much. This has come about because of man’s inability to deal with this issue. Humanity has tended to bury their heads when this subject came up because they do not know how to deal with it. Until the last half century when charitable organizations have come into being and began to help these countries, very little was done. Unfortunately these organizations do not get a great deal of help and have to cope the best they can. However, there is poverty in every country. Even in the USA there are people sleeping in cars and families that cannot afford to send their children to school because they do not have clothes decent enough to wear.
In every country around the world you will find poverty in some way endured by the people of those countries. Until humanity as a whole changes, one can do very little except support those organizations that try to help these people and countries. Education is the key. You have a saying which my channel uses a great deal – and I consider it a wonderful saying – “You can feed a man a fish and feed him for a day, or you can teach him to fish and feed him for a lifetime.”
You can give all the money you like to many of these people but, unless they can help themselves, they cannot move forward. The organizations you mention do wonderful work by building wells, providing work, and giving back dignity to these people. However, each person has to respond to this; you cannot force anyone to do it and, as a student of mine you know that the Self does not often want to change. It is fearful of change. It is up to each individual soul to want to assist in situations such as this. You can assist by donating money for a child’s education, building a well, or creating industry for these people. Often they do not want donations of money; they want to work and learn and be educated.
You have already chosen to sponsor a child and you can sponsor more if you wish. However, just sponsoring one child is a huge assistance to the people who run the organization you are helping. If these people do not learn their lessons and grow through them, they will just return for another round of incarnation. Often by helping one can stop a soul from moving forward. Humanity does not realize this.
Through the years religions have stated one should help people; but often you cannot help people who do not want to help themselves, and often that help has stopped a soul from moving forward by making it easy to move forward rather than the soul learning the way they should and have chosen to do – the hard way. I know my channel and you, yourself, would not be where you are today without learning the hard way.
I can give you no magic words to assist with this issue. As I stated before, it is often a case of being educated as a group rather than individually. Each soul is where it needs to be on its soul path. If you wish to assist with easing this situation, perhaps start in your own country by assisting organizations who deal with those on the poverty level, donating clothes and food to needy families. Many often go and help those in other countries without seeing the need in their own country. Yes, you can assist by donating overseas, but it is best to begin in your own country and make a difference there, for it is close to your heart.
You are a beautiful soul Natalija, and your heart is in the right place, but these people need education rather than handouts; they need to work and provide a living for themselves. They need to be treated with respect and love rather than scorn because of their need and poverty. When this can be done, humanity as a whole will raise its vibration, and those in need will become whole again.
One final thing; perhaps you might like to take time to visit an overseas country and spend time assisting those in need. What a wonderful way to spend a holiday – assisting a village build a well, or in educating children, or just being there to assist families in need. There are organizations who take people on short-term holidays. I am sure if you search on the Internet you will find some.
Know in your heart that all is well. Those in poverty are learning their lessons in their way, just as you have done in yours. Many a soul has come through a very difficult time to be successful; my channel is an example of that. She also was subjected to hardship and difficulty but grew and learned from the experience which she would not have done prior to that. She is now better able to help others who are going through the same experience. Thank you for your letter, I am sure it – and my reply – will assist many who read it to understand about poverty and how to deal with it.
